Why Volunteer when you can Lumateer?

As a non-commercial event LUMA provides wonderful opportunities for people to be involved with the setup, running and pack down of this event. We require around 50 volunteers to join us and make up our family of Lumateers.

Lumateers will contribute their skills, energy and enthusiasm in one of two main areas: behind the scenes – event set up and pack down or as part of the scene – greeting guests, delivering information, collecting donations and more. (See below for Lumateer roles).

Becoming a Lumateer means you will gain first-hand experience in event set up and delivery, you will meet a great team of people, be part of one of the most exciting events in the southern lakes area and you will also make a fantastic contribution to this community.

You do not need any prior experience to become a Lumateer but you will need to be 18 years or older, be good at communicating with others, listening to instruction, multi-tasking, using initiative and turning up with keenness and excitement for the role you have been assigned.

Each Lumateer is required to commit to a minimum of 2 shifts (shifts approx. 3-4 hours) and will be required to attend a Lumateer Briefing and an Event Briefing.

All Lumateers receive a generous goodie bag and 2018 sees the introduction of the Lumateer Wrap Party!

If you have any volunteer questions, big or small, please email Leigh at

Thanks for getting this far, we are very thankful to nearly have you on board! Here is a breakdown of the positions available:

Getting to really see behind the scenes and work directly with some of our artists. We need people who can lift, carry, climb, listen, smile and generally be very useful! There will be all sorts of things to do including chatting with the public about what’s going on and keeping them safely out of the way.

Working alongside one of our key Managers to assist with installation and set up around the gardens. This will be fast paced, very fluid and require lots of initiative and energy.

Assisting with the management and coordination of volunteers before and during the event. Working alongside the LUMAteer manager particulary during the evening event times.

Working at the entry points of LUMA, welcoming guests and bearing information. Pointing people in the right direction and being knowledgeable about LUMA so that you can comfortably answer any questions visitors may have. Creating a sense of arrival for guests. You will also be encouraging and collecting donations from guests.

Running around checking on festival staff, this job is fluid, flexible and ever-changing.  You may find yourself helping out in all kinds of random ways. You will come and go from the Luma HQ. You will be armed with a short survey to gather information from guests on your travels, you will be helping out with our Recycle stations and you will be acting as safety officers by identifying hazards to help support the key LUMA team to ensure the event presents a safe environment for everyone to enjoy.

During the day we like to have a presence in the Gardens and the Art Walk area so that someone is chatting with the public to let them know what is going on and when to come to the event. Circulating between all the areas.

It’s certainly not one of the glory jobs but one that we are probably THE most grateful for! As they say, many hands make light work and we need a crew who can get stuck in and help break things down, cart stuff around and help revert the gardens back to their natural state.
