Dark Mata is our 5th LUMA installation and in many ways is a culmination of all that has come before. Melding Light, darkness, projection, delicate sonic sonic landscapes, the loudest of the loud, innovative staging and location.
Drawing on a mix of previously released music and new songs especially composed for Luma 2021 the 45min show is sonic journey. The journey begins at a place of quiet introspection and grows to a sonic height that diverges from comfort to confrontational.
The music is paired with a lighting experience that connects the performers and audience to the landscape through movement, darkness and light. This current between all the parties grafts a symbiotic relationship that binds band, audience, landscape and perceptions.
The final ingredient is projection. Using the Crucible Stone as our canvas we project the images that are already forming in the viewer’s mind. Whether it be words, moving images, abstract shape or colour tonality these visuals knit the sight and sound into a cohesive experience.
The piece was designed by Joe Barron-Cowie, Scott Kennedy and Andy Paterson, who also composed and perform all of the music live in each performance. EchoKnot is a Queenstown based Post-Rock band that has performed at LUMA every year since the festival began. In the past they have created memorable installations including Transparence and Totem. In 2019 they released their first studio album, ‘Under a Mountain’.
