LUMA 2018 – Shining a Spotlight on Queenstown. As the nights are getting colder, thoughts of winter are starting to creep into New Zealander’s minds. Lighting up our cold winter nights again this year is LUMA; Queenstown’s award-winning light festival (June 1 – 4).
The countdown is officially on with only seven weeks to go, and I for one can’t wait to see what they have in store for the 2018 event.
LUMA is returning over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend hosts four evenings of illuminated art, light, sculptures and entertainment; taking participants on a sensory journey through nature. The event is free and transforms Queenstown Gardens into what can only be described as a Winter Wonderland. Thoughts of Narnia or Never Neverland spring to mind, which I think is quite an apt description for the incredible bubble of life that is Queenstown.
The thought-provoking installations encourage public interaction, art, culture and education through stunning light sculptures. The event will see local and international artists collaborating on an installation using over 90,000 individual light sources to turn trees in the Queenstown Gardens into an enchanted forest.
The concept behind LUMA is almost as inspirational as the installations themselves. Completely Non-profit, it is run entirely by volunteers, bringing together the local people and opening an enlightening conversation; creating a stronger sense of community within the town. Shining a spotlight on why Queenstown is such an incredible place to live, with some equally incredible inhabitants.
As trust chairman Duncan Forsyth explains, enhancing and promoting the creative and cultural heart of Queenstown is at the core of everything LUMA represents. “There really is something invigorating about connecting strangers on a dark and wintery evening through forms of light and music. The festival is run by a group of dedicated young Queenstown professionals who donate thousands of hours of their time to bringing the ‘life’ of the community back into the town center.
