The lights are off and everyone’s at home…⠀

Kia ora koutou.⠀ ⠀
To all our friends, partners and the wider LUMA family.⠀ ⠀
For the last ten months the LUMA crew have been dreaming, planning, scheming and preparing for Queenstown’s award-winning arts and culture event, scheduled to land over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. More recently we’ve been crossing our fingers that LUMA20 would be able to defy the Covid-19 odds and bring a ray of bright, colourful light to the start of June.
It wasn’t to be. ⠀
Today the LUMA Light Festival Trust made the difficult decision to cancel for 2020 and focus our energy on looking after each other, our whanau, our businesses and the wider Queenstown Community. This will enable us to return brighter than ever in 2021.
This is a huge blow to our family of artists, partners, fellow instigators and funders. We would like to take this chance to sincerely thank everyone who has been a part of the LUMA story so far. This is the beginning of the next chapter and we aim to begin working on LUMA21 as soon as the time feels right for us and the wider community.

All partners who have been invoiced will receive a full refund or credit note and discussions are underway with our major funders to agree on a rollover plan for 2021. We are acting decisively and will return all funds gathered for LUMA20 back into the community to support local businesses at this critical time.⠀
⠀
The government’s decision to impose restrictions on incoming visitors and more recently, to discourage large gatherings, is the right one and we fully support it. Every effort must be made to slow down the spread of the virus and give our health system a chance to minimise harm to all New Zealanders.

We are fortunate to live in a community which knows how to look after people and it’s our shared responsibility to care for one another and above all stay safe. ⠀

LUMA Southern Light Project is pleased to announce an opportunity for artists to participate in the creation of a new LUMA initiative, VivoExotica. Located at the very heart of LUMA20 and the Queenstown Gardens, VivoExotica will be a self contained art space designed to showcase original New Zealand artwork and sculpture.⠀
⠀
The winning entry at VivoExotica will be honoured with the Mount Edward LUMA Arts award carrying a single prize of $10,000. ⠀

The call is open to established and emerging artists, artist teams, community groups, sculptors, designers or architects who wish to submit an exterior sculpture or art installation that will become one of the inhabitants of this extraordinary collection.⠀

Two LUMA artists combine meshing sound and spirit.

Two LUMA artists combine meshing sound and spirit. Local Mount Edward winery and pioneering NZ electronic artists Pitch Black, both longtime LUMA collaborators are Stoked to be releasing a special collaboration. Pitch Noir a dub heavy blend of tonal drinking joy and Third Light, Pitch Black’s sixth Album, Epic electronic fusion born of deep analogue dub. A creative friendship first forged during their formative years in the early 80’s was reignited by a chance meeting in 2008 at a South Island party where Pitch Black were playing and Mount Edward consumed.

Art forms out of all spaces and from that re-ignition a series of collaborations were born. Pitch Black's music infusing daily cellar life with bespoke soundscapes and visuals, Mount Edward's wine giving new impetuses to musical creativity.

Now with the release of Pitch Black's 6th album Third Light, this collaboration has reached a new level - a wine designed to be drunk slowly over the 60 minutes the album takes to evolve.
