These Pou symbolise the Kaitiakitanga of this area.
Pou mauī – Rimurapa / Bull Kelp. This Pou represents Pōhā, a traditional Maori bag made from the southern bull kelp to preserve and transport kai for our Māori ancestors. The Rimurapa pattern here also signifies Kaitiakitanga, and the Manawa of Lake Whakatipu.
Pou katau – Pūhoro. The pūhoro is a Māori design used in kowhaiwhai, Tā Moko and Whakairo. The design on this Pou represents Ngā Hau e Wha. Welcoming and guiding those visiting from the four winds.
A collaboration with mana whenua, the Mana Tahuna Trust and SILO.
