ANGUS MUIR

Human Moth

Angus has been with us from the very begining, enabling the pilot project in 2015 happen, and ever since has been a cornerstone of the project. 

Angus Muir completed a Masters in Architecture at Auckland University in 2013. Muir works a lot on projects relating to light and public space. He runs Angus Muir Design studio in Auckland, specialising in working with clients to develop spaces, objects and events that invite and inspire interaction and enjoyment.

Angus Muir creates moments. Specialising in atmospheric architecture, Muir’s work is dedicated to conceiving and executing contemporary, immersive experiences.

Crochet Artists

Kirsten, Lenka and Michelle of Adventures in Wool NZ have brought two installations to LUMA – Undersea Adventures in Wool in 2022 in the shape of a crocheted aquarium and, with the help of a number of local artists, Flight of Fancy in 2023 – a fantasy forest housed in the Queenstown Gardens glasshouse.

Laser Hustler

Cat universe is a tapestry of textures, techno, and the radiance of lasers. She earlessly assembles event environments, by layering illuminating tech and decorative textural elements that amplify the sites uniqueness. Her quest is to transform any space, unveiling new dimensions of lighting and art experiences for all to enjoy and to forget where they are.

Come and blend in at the Rose Garden for Garden of Arborea where Cat will be performing orchestra of laser beams, and smoky atmospheric light play.

daniel brown

Visual Artist

Daniel K. Brown completed his Master’s degree at Yale University. He has been awarded seven international arts fellowships including the Fulbright Fellowship, three New Zealand national research fellowships, 15 professional awards for collaborative designs, and twelve teaching awards including the NZ National Award for Sustained Excellence in Tertiary Teaching. A 5-year retrospective of his work was exhibited in the Italy Pavilion of the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale as part of the exhibition “Reflections of the Future”.

Hannah Walker has been part of the New Zealand light community for over 10years. Drawing on a background in visual effects, and utilising projection and evolving technologies.

Harris Keenan is an Auckland-based multi-disciplinary artist specialising in illustration and graphic design. With nine years in the industry, Harris has worked with national and international clients. Such as; Universal Music, Liam Lawson, Splore Festival, YGB Records, Atomic Coffee, Four Square, Auckland Transport, Auckland Council, Angus Muir Design, and many more.

Now, Harris has shifted his focus to the music industry, where he excels in Creative Direction, Art Direction, and Content Production. He collaborates closely with artists shaping their visual identities and infusing his illustrations with the essence of their music.

We are the creative team behing LUMA, drawing from a diverse range of skill sets, the collective creates innovative work and experiences that celebrate the intersection of art, design and technology. Mia Straka

‘Working with my hands to bring an idea into the physical realm whilst embracing unexpected discoveries in the process still sparks wonder.
Since 2012 my contemporary jewellery practice has extended to include larger scale works, installations, interactive and collaborative projects and adjacent mediums including performative and video works,  playing with the relationship between body and object. I’m interested in expressing inner landscapes through creating immersive, transformative and collective experiences.’

Mia Straka is one of four partners in Tāmaki Makaurau based jewellery studio Workshop6. Since graduating in 2001 with a Bdes(hons) in jewellery from Unitec, Auckland; Straka has exhibited regularly,
touring public institutions and galleries nationally and internationally. Works are held in the Arts House Trust Collection (NZ).

Recent projects include The Handshake Project- Handshake6, Handshake7; The Valere Talisman Project (est. 2017) and The Talisman Project (est. 2014). Straka has undertaken art residencies in Berlin, Germany 2018 and Oaxaca, Mexico 2014.

Amber Liberté is a multidisciplinary artist and choreographs, directs and performs in theatrical, film & gallery settings. She has worked as a dancer and choreographer for Footnote NZ Dance, Auckland Theatre Company, Red Leap, Splore Festival, Tino Sehgal and George Enescu University of Arts in Romania. Amber’s dance-film and music video works have been finalists in Aotearoa, Berlin, New York, Utah, Chicago, Paris, and Portugal.

The Wānaka-Tāhuna Dance Collective brings together incredible talent from both sides of the Crown Range mountains.

The Queenstown Lakes communities may be separated by challenging topography, but a love of dance and shared environment sees dancers travelling back and forth over the mountains to train and rehearse with each other throughout the year.

‘Mycelium’ therefore, is not only a beautiful description of trees and roots communicating via mycelial networks, but of the equally strong support network our local creatives and Festivals such as LUMA, show each other.

Nightly performances at 6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm each night.

Amanda Mania

Co-founder of both Brazen and Splore, has been a driving force in New Zealand’s music and festival scenes for over three decades.
Now in her mid-50s, Amanda continues to inspire with her dynamic DJ sets and her vibrant stage presence. Her performances have lit up many major and boutique events throughout NZ, proving that her sonic touch with music knows no bounds. Her legacy is defined not just by the tracks she plays but by the paths she paves: for creativity, for empowerment, and for a world where music brings us all a little closer together.
Together with Sarah Crowther (Mamadafunk), her co-founder at Brazen, Amanda champions the talents of women, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ artists. EchoKNot

EchoKnot is a Post-Rock band that formed in Queenstown, New Zealand in 2015. The trio of Joe Barron-Cowie, Scott Kennedy and Andy Paterson weave a sonic landscape that varies between gentle and giant. Taking inspiration from 80’s art-rock, 90’s shoe gaze, 2000’s big beat and blending them into a sound that can at once be immersive and cathartic, anthemic and anarchic.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara based Jen Kyle returns to LUMA for the second year.
She currently hosts a monthly show with DJ Coda on RadioActive.FM.
Prior to this she gained a cult following for her Drive Show of 12 years where she played everything from techno to disco, punk to funk, disco, new wave and beyond.
Having the musical freedom that a place like RadioActive.fm provides combined with growing up working at and dancing at legendary Glasgow clubs such as The Sub Club and The Arches has resulted in Jen having a broad musical spectrum. Her sets pull from that whilst being strongly influenced and moulded by her beloved Glasgow.

LUMA.
Jen will be playing Monday the 6th of June helping to round off the LUMA festivities.

LUDUS

Sound Artist

and The ever-evolving sound project Ludus strives to constantly explore new realms of electronic music. Whanganui based, Ludus has toured and played throughout Aotearoa by way of DJing and live performance over recent years.

Between opening for acts such as techno legend Kevin Saunderson and Pitch Black and performing at festivals and venues accross the motu, Ludus can also be found collaborating with other artists to compose film soundtracks, full-length dance works and sound art commissions.

Her debut album Two of the Same was released in 2021 by Pōneke label Strange Behaviour, and upcoming self-released dance EP Hill Top Valley is set to be released in coming months.

Ludus is playing a few sets, Satruday the 1st of June in the Rosegarden, Friday and Sunday in the LUMA Lounge and Monday in Mono No Aware.

Co-founder of Brazen, promoter, music event & festival manager, but most of all, dedicated DJ booth dweller, has an insatiable drive to take dance lovers on soulful, funky music journeys.
Sarah (Mamadafunk) has been delivering her unique styles of DJ sets for over 15 years in NZ and is most famous for using this platform to tell stories and create journeys, weaving together solid, funky, phat beats with delightful melodies and samples, to create progressive intriguing adventures for dance-floor dwellers.
Together with Amanda Wright (Amandamania), her co-founder at Brazen, Sarah champions the talents of women, non-binary, and LGBTQ+ artists. Mark K Johnson

Composer

Mark K. Johnson received his PhD in music at the Victoria University of Wellington School of Music, and his MA degree from New York University, where he completed his thesis The Structure of Meaning in Music. Mark was artist in residence with the Nevada Opera and a regular concert soloist for the Reno Symphony. He made his solo concert debut with the American Symphony at Lincoln Centre, New York in 1989 in the role of David in Honegger’s Le Roi David. As a composer Mark’s central interest is ‘narrative’ music.

Step into the world of Mia Kober, a New Zealand-based music curator renowned for her ability to craft silky sounds, soulful basslines, and curate immersive experiences. Mia stands as an integral pillar of the vibrant music community in NZ, leaving her mark on festivals like Shipwrecked, Splore, Ponderosa, Rhythm & Alps and many more. 

Not defined by genre but with an intuitive feel for what the audience needs, peak time or ambient Mia’s sets are all about the feeling. Mia’s music is an eclectic display of deep grooves soaking in soul, sonic atmospheres, slinging chunky selections, and emotive electronica, all woven with a sprinkling of surprises.

Journeys are never linear. Mia follows many bends in the road, forming tantalising tales to move you and groove to. Take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.

Mike Hodgson

Mike has been crafting soundscapes and musical tapestries for over 3 decades. Hodge burst onto the scene in the late 1990’s with Paddy Free as part of pioneering electronica artists Pitch Black. 

Mike brings his wealth of musical knowledge to the soundcapes of LUMA. 

 

MISLED CONVOY

Sound Artist

Misled Convoy is Mike from Pitch Black’s solo project, his vehicle for exploring outside of the constraints of his more populist collaboration.

The first Misled Convoy release was a live album recorded at Beautiful Music, Auckland in 1999 and was followed by Translations, remixes of a plethora of acts from around the world. Pitch Black’s last hiatus gave Mike the chance to finally record Misled Convoy’s studio debut, Tickling the Dragon’s Tail in 2014. Hailed as “stunning” by Louder than War, it was expectedly dark and dubby, but was also surprisingly groovy in parts with plenty of ambience and noise in there too.

His live show is as rich and nuanced as his recordings, with beats and bass emerging from a deep ambient introduction, seamlessly interwoven with an array of dub effects, delay and reverb.

.MISSY has released three albums to date: 2022’s Total Nightmare, and the twin-album release, Major Arcana and Minor Arcana (2021). The albums follow-up her critically acclaimed EP (Strange, 2019). She regularly features on Spotify editorial playlists and has released 23 singles to date, with Dark Side the most popular with Spotify listeners with over 900,000 streams.

Hailing from a musical upbringing in Dunedin, New Zealand (her mother is Choir Director for Knox Church, her uncle Todd Knudson is drummer for the legendary indie band The Chills), Abigail moved to NZ’s music capital of Auckland and quickly established herself as both an electric performer and a talented producer/composer/writer.

Missy is playing and in the Rose Garden on Friday the 31st of May, in Mono No Aware on Saturday the 1st, LUMA Lounge on Sunday the 2nd. 

 

MR OZ

DJ

Mr. Oz has been around the block a few times and has the gigs/events under his hat to show for it. Its not often ya get an iconic label manager in the mix, look out for outstanding music!

DJing since the late 80’s, starting out in London on pirate radio Fusion 89.8FM, he’s proven that the job spec of a DJ does in fact embrace more than just playing records! In ’91 he joined React Music as Label Manager overseeing the release of Candi Staton ‘You’ve got the love’, Age of Love, Carl Cox F.A.C.T and the infamous Reactivate compilation series to name just a few…

Since migrating to New Zealand in 2001 and after the madness that was the 90’s he settled into a different pace of life. Based in Wellington he has enjoyed weekly residencies at many venues across the capital, as well as appearances at festivals and venues throughout the country.

NED RAW

DJ

Ned Raw, a Kiwi based in Melbourne, has been deeply involved in electronic music for decades. His journey began in the 90s, where he DJ’ed across New Zealand, sharing stages with luminaries such as Alex Paterson, Dave Angel, Richie Hawtin, Freddy Fresh, and Thomas P. Heckman. After a hiatus, Ned rediscovered his passion for electronic music during the pandemic.

Over the last four years, he has fully immersed himself back into the scene, blending timeless cuts from the 90s with contemporary releases. Ned’s sets traverse a diverse range of styles, from strange and spacey ambient sounds to dance floor-focused techno. His musical journey reflects his deep love and appreciation for the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music.

Ned will be playing his infectious grooves on opening night, Thursday the 30th of May.

Peter Hobbs

Sound Design

Peter Hobbs creates emotive music and sound for film, dance, art works and album recordings. He has won numerous international and national awards and recently completed a Masters in Environmental Sound Art, exploring the terrain between electronic music and the sounds of nature.

Peters compositions can be heard all across the gardens, woven into a number of installations.

RIBERA

DJ

Barcelona born and raised and kiwi adopted for over a decade, Ribera is the master mind and resident DJ of the world-renowned brand Electric Rush. He has become known for his wide approach and seamlessly joining the dots between house and techno with his own sense of storytelling which has bought him to playat some of the most sought-after dancefloors across the globe, a true purveyor ofdeep infectious grooves.

Ribera will be gracing the decks this LUMA on opening night Thursday 30th of May.

 

SINCLAIR

DJ

Originating from Edmonton, Canada, Sinclair (aka Simon) moved to Aotearoa in the late 90’s. Starting on local radio in his hometown of Queenstown in 2001. Sinclair plays a huge spectrum of music, from 90 bpm chuggy disco and deep house, to organic house and melodic techno.

Where other DJs tend to throw epic build after epic build, a Sinclair set will build steadily through a tightly woven musical tapestry.

Simon plays regular sets at various bars and festivals throughout the country.
