Wow, what a weekend! LUMA Queenstown 2016 brought magic to the Gardens over Queen’s Birthday Weekend (3rd – 5th June).
The free light festival showcased a selection of art sculptures, light installations and illuminations. Thrown into the mix was a lounge area (serving up The World Bar’s yummy mulled wine) and a cinema beneath the stars, courtesy of local group GDI.
It was Queenstown’s very first light festival, and with more than 4,000 people braving the cold to enjoy the activities on Friday evening alone… we’re going to make a safe bet and say that it’s soon to become a staple on Queenstown’s social calendar.
It was organised by the creative solutions company SILO (South Island Light Orchestra) and supported by the QLDC, volunteers and local businesses like Queenstown.com. Sculptures were curated by fine art gallery Toi o Tahuna, Angus Muir Design contributed a number of light installations as did A/V production specialists TomTom Productions.
It took more than a year and a half to put the project together on a budget of just $75,000.
Keep an eye out around the CBD for LUMA Continues. Light sculptures will pop up in unexpected places around town until late June. LUMA Projecta, an arts and photography collaboration between SILO, Wakatipu High School students and local videographers and photography professionals will run 9th – 11th June across the CBD and Front Room Gallery will be hosting events in conjunction with Manual Magazine.
