As the nights draw in and there’s a distinct chill in the air, thoughts turn to winter in Queenstown, and a bubble of excitement starts to grow. Fresh snow on the mountains, crisp star-strewn evenings, hot food held in warm fingers, friends, celebration, community; LUMA.
Once more Queenstown prepares to host this award-winning light and art experience – it’s an event in continual planning as it grows from strength to strength each year, yet retains its original core values. It’s about us, the town and the local community, coming together to create a spectacular display of light for everyone to enjoy – residents and visitors alike. We light up Queenstown for the world to see, LUMA is our hearts in colour and on display – world this is us!
Volunteer hours are too many to count, both in the planning and over the Queens Birthday weekend, which sees locals pull together as LUMAteers – you’ll see them wholeheartedly engaged in the event, as a combination of tour guide, information desk, and a best friend. Talk to them, they’re open, they’re enthusiastic, they want to know you and why you’re here and show off the event of the year! Which, in truth, is so much more than a light festival, even including the live entertainment, good food, warm drinks and unique art installations – it’s a joining together of hearts and minds, of vision and action, of a love of this small town and the people who find themselves drawn here.
So, whatever else you plan to do in Queenstown, don’t miss this illuminating event. And when you step into that first pool of light, that first gasp of admiration, take a moment to feel the enthusiasm that created the magic around you, the community that waits with open arms for your enjoyment of what’s been achieved, that waits to welcome you into their hearts.
